Rosemary Stanton featured speaker at Australasian Aquaculture: seafood for health the focus
ROSEMARY STANTON, Australia’s best-known nutritionist, will be a featured speaker in the opening session of the Australasian Aquaculture 2006 conference in Adelaide on Monday (28 August 2006).
Ms Stanton’s appearance at Australasian Aquaculture is being sponsored by Seafood Services Australia (SSA) and Managing Director Mr Ted Loveday said SSA’s involvement reflected its commitment to spreading the good news about the health benefits of seafood.
“Worldwide, there is growing recognition of the vital role to be played by seafood in enhancing and maintaining good health at a personal and community level,” Mr Loveday said.
“Increasing the per capita consumption of seafood in Australia, in fact throughout the western world, would reduce the rates of several major illnesses, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and significantly reduce personal suffering and the cost of health care.
“Rosemary Stanton is dedicated to spreading the news about the importance of a healthy diet and Seafood Services Australia is very pleased to be involved in sponsoring her appearance at Australasian Aquaculture.
“Her address to the conference will cover ‘Eating for Wellbeing: The Benefits of Seafood.
“Dr Rosemary Stanton is Australia's best-known nutritionist. Her formal qualifications include a Science Degree in Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and post-graduate qualifications in nutrition and dietetics. She is the author of 31 books and has written over 3,200 articles for magazines and newspapers throughout Australia and New Zealand. Rosemary, features frequently on radio and television, and lectures to medical students, doctors, teachers, nurses, sporting groups and to the general public.
”Her major aim is to change Australians' poor eating habits so that people have healthier diets, and eat more enjoyable foods which create minimal environmental damage. To this end she maintains equal interests in the twin areas of food and nutrition.”
Mr Loveday said Seafood Services Australia was actively promoting greater recognition of the health benefits of seafood, throughout Australia and overseas.
“SSA last month formed a global network to spread the good news about the health benefits of seafood,” Mr Loveday said. “This follows an international workshop conducted by SSA in Cairns. The network spans Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Mr Loveday said SSA had conducted the workshop and a series of meetings with international researchers in Cairns as part of its “Seafood for Life” program, designed to improve the health of Australians by promoting seafood consumption.
“The Cairns workshop highlighted the fact that research round the world has established the vital role seafood can play in curing, alleviating or avoiding a wide range of serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers.
“In fact, so much work is being conducted by health researchers round the world it is difficult for any one organisation to keep up to date with the latest results. The new international network formed by Seafood Services Australia will help encourage, monitor and report the latest news about the health benefits of seafood.
“It has been shown conclusively that greater seafood consumption will help people live longer, healthier lives and has the potential to save thousands of Australians from premature death and save billions of dollars a year in health care costs. SSA’s network will be highlighting the latest research results as they as they are released.”
Mr Loveday said SSA had established a new website, where further information about the health benefits of seafood was available: http://www.seafood.net.au/health
